Blizzard - Day 2

Today we ventured out to explore the snowy world around us. First thing this morning everything was still snow covered.

I took a walk with Lou and Rudy, but about half way down the block, Rudy decided he didn't want to go with us, so he headed back to Paul.

The sites in the neighborhood included many trees with piles of snow on them.

Our cars all buried (there are 3 because we have my dad's car while he is away).

I was fascinated with these markings in the snow and finally figured out that they were from ice that fell off of the power lines.

I was talking to Rudy about making a snow angel and he told me he wanted to make a head print. he then leaned over and put the top of his head in the snow. It's a good thing he was wearing a hat!

After Paul did some shoveling, and Rudy and I had gone in, Paul took a walk down to the bay.

The telephone poles looked so cool with thick snow on just one side. It's amazing that it didn't just slide off the pole.

In the afternoon, we went out again, this time to play in the backyard.

Paul and I made snowmen that Rudy named. Here are Slidey (at the top) and Downy.

Rudy has been in Superhero mode lately. While outside he kept saying to Paul (in his 'bad guy' voice) "Let's get the girl!" and then he'd throw snow at me. So the battle of the sexes begins in my house and I am outnumbered as usual!

This is Paul's snowman that Rudy named Lumpy. I have a post I've been planning about how Rudy names things that I will have to do this week because these snowmen fit right into it!

Usually we can't see this part of the fence because of the bushes that are here. You can see they are weighted down about 3 feet by snow.

Icicles hanging from a tree.

After playing in the back we took a walk. Continuing the Superhero theme, Rudy made sure he had snow in his hand at all times so it could be his shield.

I took this picture because it was a great perspective of how deep the snow was. Obviously the snow on the right is affected by the snow plowed from the street but the snow on the left is affected by the snow blown off the sidewalk. It reached almost to my knees on either side.

Blizzard - Continued

After almost 24 hours of snow, it has finally stopped. I would say we have at least a foot and a half but there are so many drifts it is hard to really say.

Our front yard and tree covered with snow.

Paul's handy work.

Our tree with snow all over the base of it from the wind.

Paul decided to go out during a lull in the storm and do some shoveling. it worked out well because we only ended up getting 4 or 5 more inches later in the day. Here he is working on clearing the driveway. Of course as he did...

...a snowplow (or actually bulldozer) came by and plowed the street again.

Here is the snowplow pushing a bunch of snow in front of our neighbor's driveway - nice! But Paul said the driver actually ended up coming back again and pushing some of it out of the way.

Our undisturbed backyard. There are a few dog prints - not visible here - but other than that no signs of any other animal. I can't wait to see in the morning if there are rabbit tracks out there.

Remember this picture from our kitchen window? This is the same tree with much more snow on it.

As of almost midnight on Saturday, we've managed to survive without losing our power, although there are a lot of people still without power tonight. I'm not sure how Paul and I would have survived without being able to check our local news station's web site for updates all day and our Facebook pages and email. Thank goodness we didn't have to find out!

Blizzard of 2010

It has been an unusually snowy winter for us. Last weekend we had an unexpected snowstorm that left us with about 6 inches. Then Tuesday morning we had more snow. Seen here - just a few inches outside of our kitchen window.

This weekend we are getting a blizzard and expecting close to 2 feet of snow. It's been over 10 years since we've had this much snow. Since my dad is away, and we have to keep an eye on his cat, Dusty, on the weekends (he has pet sitters coming in during the week), we figured we should bring him to our house since we'll be snowed in. This hasn't been too bad so far , considering we have 2 cats and a dog. Most of them are doing a good job of ignoring each other and staying in different parts of the house. Dusty is craving attention, though. Last night he sat at Paul's feet while he was on the computer.

Before I went to bed last night, the snow had started. Here's the view outside our front door at 10pm.

And here's the same view this morning at 7am.

If you look closely, you can see that they actually plowed the street during the night - there are big piles of snow at the edge of the street - but the streets are already covered again. I'd say we had about 12 inches at this point and the snow is not scheduled to end until tonight.
